Area Supervisor

  • Location: Various HWRC & Transfer Stations across North Yorkshire
  • Hours: 40 per week
  • Salary: £26,488

We are looking for two enthusiastic, self-motivated, Area Supervisors who will be helping to manage waste sites across North Yorkshire.

Reporting directly to the Area Managers, the successful candidates will provide leadership and supervision across the Yorwaste network and will ensure all sites are operated safely, effectively, efficiently and to a high standard of customer service and satisfaction.

The Supervisors will undertake all duties associated with the management of HWRC and Transfer Station employees, including managing sickness, holidays, rotas, timesheets and Agency staff.

The successful candidates must be IT proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Time & Attendance Systems and have a positive attitude.

Previous experience of managing people is essential and a background knowledge of Environmental Legislation would be an advantage, although full training will be given.

A committed and flexible approach is also required.

Applicants must hold a valid UK driving license and COTC for CA sites (or will need to work towards).

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
To provide leadership and supervision across the Yorwaste network and to ensure all sites are operated safely, effectively, efficiently, and to a high standard of customer satisfaction.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS & DUTIES:

Ensuring that Health & Safety is the primary objective, that the sites are operated in a safe manner and that staff are properly trained and equipped to perform their roles safely. To carry out safety conversations and observations regularly, following up with corrective action where necessary.

Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and internal company policies.

Day to day management of staff across a number of sites, including managing sickness, holidays, rotas, timesheets and any relevant agency staff following processes and company inductions as required.

Ensure effective running of sites, liaising where needed with Yorwaste commercial and bulk transport planners and external contractors.

Ensure the sites are operated and maintained to a high standard including undertaking site checks, container reports and audits, reporting issues and defects via the relevant procedures and processes and following up where necessary. Ensuring the sites are kept to a high standard of cleanliness in both public and staff areas.

Provide support to other members of the team, and deputise for, the Area Manager as necessary.

Notify and investigate incidents and/or accidents across area operations and ensure they are reported in a timely manner.

Ensure that all relevant paperwork and administration is completed for all area operations.

Make sure that all materials are correctly and safely stored on site.

Investigate and respond to complaints within agreed timescales.

Investigate and undertake relevant and correct disciplinary procedures when required.

Arranging supply of materials and goods to sites where required.

Liaising with contractors to undertake repair and maintenance on sites.

Provide toolbox talks to all site staff including H&S and safety alerts.

Deliver high levels of customer service on sites and uphold customer charter as outlined by our Shareholders.

CONTACTS & RELATIONSHIPS

Internal:
The post holder will have regular and frequent contact with key personnel across the business in Health & Safety, other operations and transport.
The post holder will have regular contact with employees at all levels across the business. The contact will be in both formal and informal situations. The post holder will need to develop key working relationships with the Area Managers, the Senior Managers, Transport Managers and Planners, Asset and Maintenance Managers and Human Resources.
The post holder may deal with employees that have a key influence on our clients and customers and there may be on contentious and complex issues that will have a direct impact on Yorwaste being able to deliver the services required by the clients and customers.

External:
The post holder will have regular contact with clients, customers, members of the public, contractors, Shareholders, regulatory authorities and specialists to support all operational functions in order to deliver the requirements of Yorwaste, its clients and customers.
The post holder will need to influence, persuade and negotiate with a wide range of the external stakeholders, customers and partners on a range of complex and sometimes contentious, issues.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential:
COTC for CA Sites (will need to work towards this)
First Aid, COSHH, Manual Handling, IOSH Managing Safely
Driving Licence
Desirable:
Customer care and conflict management, OLAT awareness training
IOSH Managing Safely (will need to work towards this)

EXPERIENCE
Essential:
Experience working in a busy operational setting
Experience of working within a customer focussed service
Experience of working within a multifunctional operational team
Desirable:
Working within waste and recycling industry
Working with contractors and clients
Managing operational staff

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Knowledge of working within an operational setting and working with site operatives.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of health and safety procedures and to be able to communicate this effectively to site staff, contractors and third parties as required.
Previous experience of undertaking site audits, incident/accident investigations understanding of investigating complaints and responding to clients with findings.
Previous experience of the waste industry is preferred but not essential as training will be given.
Understanding of environmental compliance relating to EA permits desirable.
Experience of using of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and Time & Attendance Systems.
High level of communication skills able to talk to site staff, management, clients and members of the public and part-take in meetings. Good written skills so able to complete site audits and investigations reports and any other reports information requested by Hub Managers and Senior Managers.
A pro-active, self-starter capable of making decisions and working under pressure.
Able to effectively motivate staff and manage multiple stakeholders.
