About Bedale and Waste Statistics

Bedale is a popular and attractive market town in the district of Hambleton, North Yorkshire, within a stone’s throw of beautiful Wensleydale. The town has been a centre of business and trade for centuries, and as the town benefits from a steady stream of tourism throughout the year, the dozens of businesses that have their base here are in need of commercial waste management services.

Every cafe and restaurant, from the popular Hummingbird Cafe on Market Place, to the bustling Green Dragon, find themselves much in demand throughout the year. Tourism reaches its peak during the summer high season when visiting touring cyclists and hikers pass through the town seeking a quick pit stop and a dose of English hospitality. Wensleydale cheese is, of course, a local speciality, as is real dairy ice cream from Dales herds and Yorkshire beers.

Bedale’s population of just over 5,000 keep the town centre busy enough when the tourism dies down during the depths of winter, ensuring that the host of unique shops (offering everything from jewellery and antiques to custom-made furniture) remain open. The town quite literally struck gold back in 2012 when metal detectorists hunting through nearby fields discovered a hoard of silver and gold. The Bedale Hoard highlighted the area’s connections with the Vikings and Saxons, and put the town on the map.

The town’s rich seam of history stretches back for centuries, and can still be seen today thanks to the preservation of many historical buildings such as the only listed Leech House in the country and the 14th century Grade I listed market cross in the centre of the town. Bedale’s Georgian heyday is reflected in the elegant buildings lining the historic market square. The 12th-century church, St Gregory’s, has been named as one of Britain’s best. Among other attractions include the heritage railway run by Wensleydale Railway, which runs through and stops in the town.

Bedale’s domestic waste is monitored by Hambleton Council. The council manages the domestic waste collection for nearly 90,000 people living in Bedale, Easingwold, Northallerton, Stokesley and Thirsk, whilst the waste disposal is undertaken by the North Yorkshire County Council. Hambleton Council has committed to a waste strategy whereby over 50% of all domestic waste collected will be either composted or recycled, as opposed to being dumped in a landfill. The Hambleton council achieved an overall recycling rate of 47.7% in 2014/15, and have made significant changes to their waste systems in order to reach the 50% recycling target set for 2020.

In 2016, Hambleton Council rolled out important changes to the way they managed waste including introducing a new sorting system, distributing larger bins and enlisting Yorwaste to assist with the collection and processing of recyclable materials.

Residents were given larger 250-litre black wheeled bins with blue lids to place their recycled materials, whilst pre-existing blue boxes became used for glass recycling only. These new bins give Bedale residents more opportunity to recycle their cans, plastics, cardboard and paper, in addition to allowing the council to accept a wider range of recyclables. Foils, aluminium trays, aerosol can and more rigid plastic packaging can now be readily recycled, greatly reducing kerbside waste and landfill usage.

Hambleton Council backed up these changes with an investment in new waste vehicles that could better handle the greater influx of recyclable materials. The vehicles have been designed to handle larger capacities of glass recycling and adapted to reduce the amount of manual handling undertaken by the crews operating them. Blue recycling boxes with glass are tipped into a separate part of the vehicle, which is then mechanically emptied into the vehicle’s main compartment, making the operation safer. Recycled materials are then delivered to Yorwaste’s network of transfer stations.

Since undertaking this challenge, both the council and local residents of Bedale have stepped up to the challenge. Between 2006 and 2012 residual waste tonnages decreased year on year, however composting tonnages for the entire Hambleton Council authority had plateaued for years. This number has increased showing that residents have responded well to the encouragement and the introduction of the revamped recycling service.

In addition to the work done by Hambleton Council, Bedale is also home to its own team of volunteers who work together to make the town a pleasant place to live in and visit. Bedale’s Litter Busters are a group of locals who meet up throughout the year to socialise and pick up litter from around the town. The group has been sponsored by the Town Council, who have provided them with equipment to better do their work.
