Who manages Bedales domestic waste?
Bedale’s domestic waste was monitored by the Hambleton Council. The council manages the domestic waste collection for nearly 90,000 people living in Bedale, Easingwold, Northallerton, Stokesley and Thirsk, whilst the waste disposal is undertaken by the North Yorkshire County Council.

What waste strategies are in place in Bedale to reduce household landfill usage?
Previously, Hambleton Council (now part of North Yorkshire Council) has committed to a waste strategy whereby over 50% of all domestic waste collected will be either composted or recycled, as opposed to being dumped in a landfill. The Hambleton council achieved an overall recycling rate of 47.7% in 2014/15, and have made significant changes to their waste systems in order to reach the 50% recycling target set for 2020.
How have these strategies impacted landfill usage in Bedale?
Between 2006 and 2012 residual waste tonnages decreased year on year, however composting tonnages for the entire Hambleton Council authority (now part of North Yorkshire Council) had plateaued for years. This number has increased showing that residents have responded well to the encouragement and the introduction of the revamped recycling service.
What other work is done in Bedale to improve the environment?
In addition to the work done by Hambleton Council (now part of North Yorkshire Council) in the past, Bedale is also home to its own team of volunteers who work together to make the town a pleasant place to live in and visit. Bedale’s Litter Busters are a group of locals who meet up throughout the year to socialise and pick up litter from around the town. The group has been sponsored by the Town Council, who have provided them with equipment to better do their work.
