To maximise your recycling, we can provide specialised services for Glass, Food, and Dry Mixed Recycling. We can also offer a collection and composting service if your company generates large volumes of green waste. If you have large volumes of other specific wastes, we would be happy to explore other specialised recycling options with you. For the waste you produce that isn’t easily recycled we can offer Waste Recovery via Energy from Waste (EfW) facilities where the waste is burned to generate electricity that then helps power the UK Economy. Whilst less green than recycling, this is considerably more environmentally friendly than landfill disposal.
There are some waste types which can’t be recycled or recovered (e.g. Asbestos). For those difficult waste streams, we can still provide a landfill disposal option.

Who manages York's household waste?
The City of York Council, in partnership with Yorwaste, manages York’s household waste. As part of a decade-long effort to reduce waste, York no longer sends waste to landfills and has increased their total amount of recycling.
What is the domestic recycling rate of York?
Domestic recycling rates have been steadily rising since 2017, with recent figures showing that 44.9% of all household waste is sent for recycling instead of landfill or waste-to-energy – a good increase on the previous figures of 42.5%.
As you might guess, as recycling rates have increased, the percentage of waste that is dumped in landfills or waste-to-energy has dropped. This figure has decreased from 59.6% to just above 33% in recent years. Indeed, York no longer sends any waste directly to landfill, and instead, it is now used to generate energy from waste.
Despite these improvements, York still has a way to go if it wants to really compete with other councils; the City of York Council currently ranks 144th for the percentage of waste recycled in the country. not bad considering there are 353 authorities on the list!
What other work is done in York to improve the environment?
Thankfully, there are a couple of local projects that have been established with the express purpose of reducing both commercial and domestic waste in York and improving the environment.
The Allerton Waste Recovery Park became operational in 2018 and processes up to 320,000 tonnes of waste every year from York and North Yorkshire. Mechanical treatment, anaerobic digestion and energy from waste processes are all used to massively reduce landfill usage from waste generated by York businesses.
