FAQ’s & Help

  • What exactly is cardboard?

Cardboard is essentially a heavy-duty paper-based product having greater thickness and superior durability or other specific mechanical attributes to paper; such as foldability, rigidity and impact resistance.

  • Why is cardboard easy to recycle?

Cardboard is easy to recycle because it can be recycled five to seven times and is a generally straightforward and easy material to recycle.

  • Why can’t I just burn my cardboard?

You shouldn’t just burn your cardboard because it is often treated with or contains man-made chemicals. When these chemicals are burned, it can release hazardous fumes into the air that are harmful to breathe in. Furthermore, burning if cardboard waste is burned rather than recycle, a reusable resource will be wasted.

  • How does recycling cardboard benefit my business?

Recycling can benefit your business by saving you money. Recycling 1 tonne of cardboard can save up to 17 trees, reduce the demand for landfill and because cardboard recycling does not incur landfill tax.

  • Can I mix different grades of cardboard in a recycling load?

You can mix different grades of cardboard in a recycling load provided that the entire load is dry and not contaminated with food, grease or chemicals. Some wax-coated cardboards are biodegradable but not recyclable.

  • Can I mix cardboard recycling with paper recycling?

Typically, corrugated cardboard is recycled separately from paper but it is okay to mix thinner cardboard into paper recycling loads.

  • Can I recycle pizza boxes?

In theory, yes, pizza boxes can be recycled. Many pizza boxes have recycling symbols on them and are made of corrugated cardboard. However, do not include cardboard that is greasy or has been splattered with food, as this will contaminate the load and render it unrecyclable.

  • Can I recycle Tetra Pak cardboard?

Yes, your Tetra Pak cardboard can be recycled. Even though Tetra Pak has been around since the 1960s, until fairly recently the answer was no and your Tetra Pak would be thrown in the bin. Nowadays, things have change and most local councils, including North Yorkshire’s, are happy to accept them with other recyclable materials.
