Services We Offer in Hawes

General Waste

General waste we collect goes to Allerton Waste Recovery Park, generating electricity to power 40,000 homes across Yorkshire yearly.

Dry Mixed Recycling

We always encourage our customers to recycle when they can. We aim to push our recycling rate up by diverting more waste from recovery to recycling. Recommended to restaurants, pubs and hotels.

Glass Waste

Glass is 100% recyclable and can be infinitely processed without losing any of its original quality.

Recommended to businesses such as hotels and pubs which might create a lot of glass waste.

Food Waste

Food waste we collect will go through anaerobic digestion – microorganisms can be used to break down your waste organically. It is a greener and more cost-effective solution than general waste recovery.

Bins and Bin Bags

Our trusty wheelie bins come in many sizes made with recyclable plastic or metal. Lock lids are available.

Pre-paid bin bags are also available for businesses with small quantities of waste.

Skips and ROLs

Our skips and Roll On Roll Offs are for anyone who produces waste in large volumes and helps keep them compact. Helps you save space and minimise disruptions to your location.

Recommended to manufacturers, suppliers, construction businesses and hotels with large amounts of waste.

Community Engagement

We care about the communities we work with. No matter where you are, our goal is to provide a tailored service that suits your needs as both a company and the area you reside. We try our utmost to ensure we close the gap in the waste economy, offering recycling services and Energy From Waste which goes straight back into the local area. Some of our recent community engagement efforts include our annual GET reCYCLING campaign and Reuse Santa Appeal.

Who manages Hawes' domestic waste?

Hawes and Wensleydale’s household waste was managed by Richmondshire District Council, covering a region that is populated by over 21,000 households over 10 villages, hamlets and smaller settlements. Although awareness for decreasing waste and increasing the amount sent for recycling, reuse or composting has been supported by such initiatives as The Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Rural Recycling Project, unfortunately, this hard work has not yet been reflected in a significant reduction of waste sent to landfill or recovered as energy from waste.

Hawes and Wensleydale’s domestic waste is now managed by North Yorkshire Council.

How has Hawes' household recycling rate fluctuated over the past decade?

In 2013/14, government statistics showed that 41.4% of household waste was sent for recycling or composting. At the time, this was less than 2 percent below the national average. Rates of household waste sent for recycling peaked at 52.5% in 2015/16, far above the national mean of 45.71%, however, this performance did not last. In 2018/2019, the rate fell to 39.2%, just under 2 percent below the national mean again.

What is the scale of the fly-tipping problem in Hawes?

Whilst many businesses are doing their part to properly dispose of their waste, there are still some who choose to do so in an improper manner. Both unscrupulous residents and careless traders are reported to have cost Richmondshire Council (now part of North Yorkshire Council) up to £50,000 a year previously for failing to properly dispose of their waste. This small minority has been reported to cost waste workers hundreds of hours each year as batches of recycled waste are often contaminated with non-recyclable materials. Across the 20 recycling banks used in the district, the Council reported that nearly all of them have some form of misuse leading to piles of rubbish collecting.
