Since 2007, the Council has made great efforts to change residents waste habits, and encourage more households to recycle, compost, or reuse their waste, instead of sending it to landfill. Government statistics show that in 2007 household waste sent for reuse in the area was at its lowest rate.

Only 25.9% of waste was sent for reuse, far below the national average at the time. Over the course of the next 6 years, however, changes to the system, and an increase in awareness, led to this percentage hitting an all-time high of 43.7%. Since this peak, numbers have declined and plateaued to a stable 38%, still 4% above the national average.
