Services We Offer in Helmsley

General Waste

General waste we collect goes to Allerton Waste Recovery Park, generating electricity to power 40,000 homes across Yorkshire yearly.

Dry Mixed Recycling

We always encourage our customers to recycle when they can. We aim to push our recycling rate up by diverting more waste from recovery to recycling. Recommended to restaurants, pubs and hotels.

Glass Waste

Glass is 100% recyclable and can be infinitely processed without losing any of its original quality.

Recommended to businesses such as hotels and pubs which might create a lot of glass waste.

Food Waste

Food waste we collect will go through anaerobic digestion – microorganisms can be used to break down your waste organically. It is a greener and more cost-effective solution than general waste recovery.

Our trusty wheelie bins come in many sizes made with recyclable plastic or metal. Lock lids are available.

Pre-paid bin bags are also available for businesses with small quantities of waste.

Community Engagement

We care about the communities we work with. No matter where you are, our goal is to provide a tailored service that suits your needs as both a company and the area you reside. We try our utmost to ensure we close the gap in the waste economy, offering recycling services and Energy From Waste which goes straight back into the local area. Some of our recent community engagement efforts include our annual GET reCYCLING campaign and Reuse Santa Appeal.

What commercial waste management services do you provide in Helmsley?
Who manages Helmsley’s domestic waste?

Helmsley’s household waste was managed by Ryedale District Council, which managed a district of approximately 20 other towns, villages and hamlets, with over 53,000 people relying on their services. Historically, the region has claimed the top spot in government statistics related to the percentage of household waste sent for recycling, reuse or composting. When these figures were first recorded across the country in 2013/14, Helmsley was one of the 20 or so settlements in Ryedale that sent 52.7% of their waste for reuse, nearly 9 percent higher than the national average! Whilst the area had not reached such dizzy heights since the District Council has consistently performed above the national average for each year after.

Helmsley’s domestic waste is now managed by North Yorkshire Council.

How does Helmsley manage litter and waste despite increased tourism?

Although council street cleaners try their best to keep the town looking its best, there are times when Helmsley looks a little worse for wear, thanks to the increased footfall. Thankfully, the town has a task force of local volunteers who donate their time on a regular basis to keep the streets of Helmsley looking their best. Helmsley Litter Pickers (HeLP) picked up more than 100 bags of litter in the last seven months of 2019 alone, showing the extent to which even such a small town can suffer from careless litterbugs. The team is supported by the Helmsley Town Council who pay for their insurance and hi-vis jackets.

How has community involvement helped improve recycling efforts in Helmsley?

The team from HeLP aren’t the only good-hearted residents of Helmsley though. After noticing that certain recycling bins were getting contaminated with other waste at the popular Cleveland Way Car Park, locals banded together to make a representation to the council for a new bin solely dedicated to Tetra Pak cartons. The new bin, installed in July 2019, prevents additional waste being thrown in and clearly states what forms of cartons are acceptable.
