About Easingwold and Waste Statistics

Easingwold is a small market town at the foot of the Howardian Hills in North Yorkshire, around 12 miles north of York. The town has a population of around 4,600 and is the focal point of public services and economic activity for numerous villages in the area. Known affectionately as ‘The Wold’, the town has a traditional, cobbled market square and a green with pretty trees and flowers. The marketplace is home to a weekly open-air market on Fridays and also hosts a farmers’ market on the third Wednesday of every month.

The town’s history can be traced back in the Domesday Book and was once home to many pubs and breweries. Although the number of these types of businesses has declined slowly since the 19th Century, there are still plenty of restaurants, cafes and pubs that require commercial waste management services. Eateries such as The Olive Branch, Fika Room and The Banyan Tree have served to build a foodie-focused reputation for Easingwold, the town regularly tops national charts for its well-respected restaurants.

A host of independent retailers ply their trade in the town – from family-run newsagents, mini supermarkets, butchers and bakers, to boutiques and galleries. Long Street, with its shops and cafes, is linked by Chapel Street to the market square. Amongst Easingwold’s more venerable shops are Charles Hobson Menswear, a business that has been serving the town and its visitors for over four decades from its location on Spring Street.

The town’s community regularly come together for local events (including the Annual Tractor Run) and the population is also supported by the charitable endeavours of Easingwold District Lions Club, who organise activities, fun runs and band contests, in addition to supplying hot meals and support to individuals in need.

Easingwold’s domestic waste management is managed by Hambleton District Council. The local authority serves a number of other nearby towns including Northallerton, Bedale, Thirsk and Stokesley and has been consistently investing in new machinery and systems that can better process the waste of Easingwold. The council’s current waste strategy intends to reduce the amount of landfill waste collected from the 40,000 homes within its remit. The council has introduced new vehicles, revamped the sorting system and invested millions into the plan which will transform the region’s waste management over the course of nine years up to 2025.

Starting in 2016, Hambleton District Council has spent close to £1.45 million each year to improve the district’s waste management. This money has gone to support a front-line waste collection team consisting of over 50 drivers and loaders. The team have been recently equipped with purpose-built vehicles that have been adapted to suit the new waste strategy. New 250-litre blue-lidded black bins were introduced alongside these new changes, intended to encourage residents to recycle more mixed materials such as rigid plastics, aerosols and aluminium trays. Pre-existing recycling boxes have been reassigned for glass only, reducing the weights that are lifted by loaders to 2kg per household collection.

Food waste is another issue that has been tackled by the local community. As part of their Year of the Environment, a food recycling project organised by Easingwold Deanery collected food waste from 23 homes and 2 shops over the course of 3 weeks. Over 250 kgs of food waste were collected in this time and turned into energy using a Combined Heat and Power process. The project was designed to highlight the amount of food waste that can be produced by homes in the local area.

Recycling hasn’t been supported by every corner of the community, however. In 2011, a glass recycling bank (one of two in Easingwold) was removed after a resident made noise complaints. The sounds of smashing glass could be heard at all hours of the day and night, according to the resident, so Hambleton District Council were forced to close the bank and move it elsewhere.
