Scarborough is a town on the North Sea coast of North Yorkshire, England. With a population of just over 61,000, it is the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast and as well as fishing and service industries, it has a growing digital and creative economy. Whether its splashing in the sea, spending money in the amusement arcades, visiting the historic castle or watching a live concert in the open-air theatre, there’s certainly never a shortage of things to do when you are in Scarborough.
There’s plenty of places to stay from boutique hotels through to quaint B&Bs, but just make sure you book in advance as it gets busy during the holiday season. The Grade 2 listed Grand Hotel is stunning. Completed in 1867 it was one of the largest hotels in the world and one of the first giant purpose-built hotels in Europe. Four towers represent the seasons, 12 floors represent the months, 52 chimneys represent the weeks and originally 365 bedrooms represented the days of the year. A blue plaque outside marks where the novelist Anne Brontë died in 1849.
There are several community-oriented venues around Scarborough that host events and meetings for groups, these include Falsgrave Community Resource Centre, whose facilities include shared office space, meeting rooms for hire and a cafe. The Centre is currently being used by MIND, Walsingham Support and a number of small local businesses. The Filey Evron Centre is a council-managed building that hosts more community-focused events, such as Zumba classes and music festivals.
Scarborough Waste Statistics
Scarborough District Council manage the household waste collection for Scarborough and its surrounding areas. Since 2007, the percentage of waste sent for reuse, recycling and compost has greatly increased, showing a shift in perception and attitudes amongst the local population. In 2007, only 28.8% of household waste was sent for reuse, placing Scarborough far below the national average. In the years following, the community took great steps forward and managed to raise this percentage to 44.1% in 2015, over 2% above the national average. Unfortunately, this rate has reduced year on year and now stands at 36.10%, below the national average but still 20% above the national minimum.
Fly-tipping was also a significant problem in the Scarborough community, which has slowly, but surely, been curbed. In 2014-2015, over 2100 reports of fly-tipping were filed to the council. Thankfully, by 2018-2019, this figure had been dramatically reduced to 167, a reflection of the commitment that both the council and population have made to improving the local environment.
Scarborough’s local environment is supported by the Scarborough Environmental Group (SEG). Comprised of like-minded individuals living in and around the area, the SEG aims to preserve the greater Scarborough area, making it a safe haven for nature and a pleasant place to live in. The group takes part in a wide range of activities throughout the year including opening walking trails, picking up dog mess, litter picking in public areas and creating better lines of communication so that the important environmental issues facing the area are properly addressed.
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the Scarborough Community Kitchen was set up by a group of local people in order to ensure that the most vulnerable in the community were being properly looked after. 16 businesses banded together to collect, prepare and deliver the food, relying completely on donations from shops and the generosity of the local people.
