Malton is a market town in North Yorkshire, located on the north of the River Derwent on the historic boundary between the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire. Sitting between the Yorkshire Moors, Wolds and the coast, Malton is the perfect location for exploring. Eden Camp, on the outskirts of Malton, is a museum in a former prisoner-of-war camp. Castle Howard (of Brideshead Revisited fame) and Kirkham Priory are all close by as well.
The town, with a population of just under 5,000, is known as a top foodie destination and was dubbed by well-known chef Antonio Carluccio as ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’, a name which has definitely stuck. Its famous food festival is a must-visit and there’s also a monthly food market, Malton Cookery School, traditional food shops and ‘Made in Malton’ artisan producers. Despite thousands of people flooding into the town for such massive events, the community of Malton still has one eye firmly on their local environment.
Circular Malton, an environmental pilot project by the Local Enterprise Partnership for York, is a plan to galvanise the businesses and organisations in the local community to re-think how they can reshape the local economy and environment, so as to keep resources within the local community and to simultaneously cut down on waste. A few of the ideas that have been suggested include the use of an anaerobic digester to turn the food waste coming from local schools, farms and food manufacturers into energy that can go straight back into the local power grid.
Local organisations such as Wold Top Brewery, Malton Cookery School and The Food Lovers Festival have already committed to supporting this pilot project, showing how cooperative Malton locals are concerning their environment.
Malton Waste Statistics
Malton and the surrounding area’s household waste is managed by Ryedale District Council, which was once the country’s leading authority when it came to recycling, reusing or composting household waste. In 2013/14 the region sent 52.7% of its household waste to be reused, instead of dumped in landfill. Since then the District has been consistently performing above the national average, showing just how well locals have taken to cutting down on their waste. The region’s outstanding environmental efforts are no doubt partly due to local environmental groups, such as Ryedale Environmental Group, which has a local branch in Malton and Norton.
The Malton and Norton Environmental Action Group made the news in 2019 when they hit the ground running with two separate campaigns aimed at improving the environment on a local scale as well as a larger scale. Refill Malton is a local arm of the national initiative aimed at reducing the use of single-use materials, such as plastic bottles and carrier bags. Local businesses have been asked to encourage customers to bring their own bags and boxes in to take away goods, and also provide them with access to taps to fill drinking bottles. The second initiative in Malton is focused on ‘re-wilding’ certain areas of the town. This scheme involves sowing native meadow flowers in green spaces around the town centre to create areas of natural beauty within the settlement which can contribute to Malton economically, mentally and environmentally.
Finally, one of Malton’s great waste-reduction successes is the Ryedale Free Fridge. This volunteer, not-for-profit organisation prevented nearly 12 tonnes of food going to waste in one year alone and has simultaneously fed 8,000 people in the process. The Free Fridge was the first of its kind in North Yorkshire and has inspired other projects to start in Filey, Hunmanby and Norton.
