Kirkbymoorside (often mispelled Kirbymoorside) is a small market town in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, between Pickering and Helmsley, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, it has a population of 3,000 and served as a trading hub before it was designated as a market town in 1254. There are two ancient coaching inns in the town, the Black Swan with its carved porch, and the cruck-framed George and Dragon, which originated in the 13th century.
Kirkbymoorside is a treasure trove for art and antique-hunters and is home to the one of Yorkshire’s quirkiest, friendliest art galleries, Bils & Rye, and also the fortnightly Ryedale Auctions, attracting collectors from across the world. Nearby is the open studio of international glass artists, Gillies Jones, and the town’s pride and joy is its award-winning 200 year-old Brass Band, a star at local events.
The town’s top attraction is Ryedale Folk Museum, with its historic ‘village’ of homes, gardens, workshops and stores – and even a witch’s hovel – providing a unique glimpse into our rural past from the Iron Age to the 1960s. There’s also a museum, animals, orchards, vintage vehicles, a lively programme of events, and nearby workshops including Greenwood Crafts, and the Chocolate Factory.
Kirbymoorside’s market square boasts award-winning, independent shops, and a 760-year-old weekly market that’s still the lifeblood of its community, a friendly place to catch the gossip. It’s also the starting point for one of the most popular and gruelling races in the Yorkshire calendar, the Kirkbymoorside 10k.
Kirkbymoorside Waste Statistics
Kirkbymoorside’s waste is managed by Ryedale District Council which comprises of around 20 settlement across the area each one of which combines for a total population of approximately 53,000 people. The larger Ryedale community is supported by an active environmental group of volunteers who have taken it upon themselves to improve their local surroundings and to reduce the environmental impact that region has on the world at large.
Ryedale Environmental Group is comprised of a handful of small local groups of which there is one based in Kirkbymoorside. One of the group’s most notable achievements can be found in the town: the Kirby Misperton Recycling Centre. In conjunction with TerraCycle, the centre collects a wide range of items that would not normally be accepted by Council recycling collections. Locals can drop off crisp packets, pet food packaging and dental items, to name a few. These items are sent off to TerraCycle in large batches, to avoid creating a further footprint, and the money the group receives is then donated to The North Yorkshire Moors Association.
It should come as no surprise that Rydedale District Council has repeatedly outperformed other regions in the country, when it comes to the percentage of their waste sent for reuse, recycling or composting. When records began in 2013/14, the region topped the country’s statistics by sending 52.7% of its waste for reuse, since then the Ryedale District has consistently performed well-above national averages.
