FIVE Fascinating Facts About Our Commercial Waste Bins

By Liam Patton on 11th April 2022 (updated: 11th April 2022) in News & Blog

Most commercial businesses generate waste and therefore need bins to accommodate this. In fact, for many businesses, waste management is the second biggest outlay after energy.

There are many factors that will affect the ultimate waste management solution for a business – from the type of waste it creates, to where the bins are kept.

Bins come in all shapes in sizes, and there’s always an answer when it comes to getting the right result for a company’s needs, budget, and location. However, it’s always helpful to be clued up on the finer details to help with the decision making.

Here’s the lowdown on the humble commercial waste bin…

Wheels in motion

There are many sizes of commercial wheelie bins – commonly starting from a more conservative 240 litres, and going right up to a large 1,100 litres, which can hold up to 18 bin bags or 70 kg of waste. To put it into context, that’s about the weight of a washing machine, seven-car tyres or an adult warthog.

Tough stuff

Most commercial waste bins are made from HDPE, which stands for high-density polyethylene. This is a profoundly durable and heavy plastic that can withstand all weathers and rough handling during refuse collections, as well as acids and bacteria sometimes generated by general waste. Other items commonly made from HDPE include toys, bleach bottles, cutting boards and water pipes.

Long life

Due to the nature of the materials used to make them, commercial wheelie bins are designed to last around 10 years. Of course, there are many factors that can affect the longevity of a bin, such as exposure to harsh weather and how it is used and handled over the years. The good news is, HDPE plastic can be recycled and is commonly reused in the creation of new bins.

Taking care

Whereas domestic bins are usually given to households free of charge by their local council, businesses must pay for the privilege of a commercial bin and, even though they are located onsite at a business, they usually remain the property of the waste provider.

The standard arrangement is that the waste provider will empty the bins at regular intervals, as agreed, and the customer will take reasonable care to ensure the bins are looked after and not damaged or vandalised. Of course, wear and tear over time is to be expected, and providers will generally ensure bins are fit for purpose and replaced when necessary, whilst taking care not to damage them during collections.

Locked and loaded

Some waste providers provide lockable bins for extra security and peace of mind. This is perfect for any waste companies that wish to avoid their waste being tampered with. It also eliminates unauthorised use.
