Yorganics Compost
From our garden to yours...
Yorganics Compost—from Yorwaste
Yorganics is 100% recycled, peat-free compost produced by Yorwaste from locally sourced garden waste. This is a great example of a circular loop or economy. We sell 20,000 bags a year and supply horticulture and agriculture with around 25000 tonnes.
The result is a sustainable product that’s perfect for your garden as a soil conditioner.
Using peat-free compost protects precious peatlands, helping to maintain habitats that are important to wildlife and biodiversity. It can also help to control flooding.

Our Process
Learn how Yorganics Compost is produced.
1. Collection and Transportation
Yorwaste collects garden waste as part of the household kerbside waste collections for the Council, or at Household Waste Recycling Centres. This is what will be transformed into Yorganics Compost.
The garden waste is then transported to a nearby transfer facility. Ultimately it is sent in bulk to one of our processing plants. They are located at Harewood Whim, Seamer Carr and Tancred.
2. Composting
Once the garden waste has reached the processing plant it is checked for contamination, shredded and placed in long rows which are called windrows. Each windrow contains around five-six hundred tonnes of garden waste.
It takes 11 (or 12?? need checking) weeks for garden waste to become compost. During this time each windrow is turned on the pad to optimise the natural composting process.
As one windrow leaves a stage of the process, another one takes its place.
3. Screening
When a windrow is ready, it leaves the pad and is placed in a trommel. It contains a mesh measuring 25mm to remove any remaining contaminants such as bits of plastics. The compost is able to be graded into the right size with the machine.
4. Ready to use
At this point, the compost is ready to be used. It is either collected by visiting farmers or transported to a bagging facility.
And for every 2500 tonnes produced, a sample is sent to a laboratory to be tested. Our compost is PAS100 certified.
