Monitoring Technician

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Monitoring Technician to join our team, based at Harwood Whin, York.

The successful candidate will ensure that all environmental sampling and analysis requirements of the business are met. Liaise with external laboratories and manage the handling of samples, collation of data and generation of reports.

In addition, the Monitoring Technician will carry out inspection and analysis of recyclate material, using data to generate material quality reports and ensure that quality standards are being met.

The role is based at Harewood Whin but will require extensive travel throughout the North Yorkshire area.

We are looking for someone with a positive, flexible approach who likes working outdoors. The successful candidate should have excellent attention to detail and an ability to develop strong working relationships with site operational supervisors and team leaders.

The ideal candidate must be confident with all aspects of IT and able to effectively use Microsoft Office to record and analyse inspection data and create KPI quality reports for the management team.

Environmental monitoring experience or an Environmental qualification would be advantageous.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
Working as part of the Risk Management Team to ensure that all environmental monitoring requirements outlined in the Environmental Permits held by the business are completed. Carry out analysis and inspection of incoming Recyclate materials and outgoing materials in line with legislative requirements, using agreed standard methods and to agreed timescales. Ensure that all data is accurately recorded and reported within agreed timescales.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS & DUTIES

Maintain the highest standards of personal HSE performance and compliance with the health, safety and environmental policies of the business.
Undertake routine sampling and analysis of ground water, surface water, effluents and gases at closed landfill sites.
Responsible for recording and maintaining accurate records of test results and reporting all results to management team and the Environment Agency as part of the Material Recycling Facility (MRF) regulatory requirements.
Undertake additional ad-hoc environmental and quality sampling and analysis as required by the business.
Process and input monitoring results into software packages. Use various software packages to analyse and interpret data.
Generate formal, periodic (weekly, monthly, quarterly & annual) written reports of monitoring data. Where necessary present reports to the management team or external bodies.
Assist the Compliance Manager with generation of periodic environmental performance reports.
Liaison with a range of suppliers and external bodies.
Provide updates and advice to the Management team on any relevant changes in environmental monitoring issues.

CONTACTS & RELATIONSHIPS

Internal:
The post holder will need to develop key relationships with all members of the Operations Management Team, Senior Managers and other employees in the business.

External:
The post holder will have regular contact with partners including, suppliers, regulatory authorities and specialists to support the environmental compliance function and deliver the requirements of the company.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

1. Qualifications
Essential:
Must hold a full UK Driving Licence.
Must hold a science-based qualification (minimum “A” level or equivalent)

2. Knowledge
Understanding of the potential environmental issues associated with the waste management sector.
Understanding of the regulatory requirements relating to waste management operations.
Understanding of the business Health, Safety and Environmental management requirements.

3. Skills
Good written and verbal communications.
Strong organisation and time management skills, with the ability to work independently.
Self-motivated and able to use own initiative under minimal supervision
Attention to detail with the ability organise complex work schedules and data.
Excellent IT skills; particularly with Microsoft Excel & Word.
