Sandy Boyle has certainly clocked up plenty of Air Miles during his career, but his work commute is now much shorter – just 16 miles in fact!
China, Australia, Hong Kong, the USA and South Africa are just a few of the countries he has worked in during roles in sectors such as distribution, aviation, manufacturing and facilities management.
But now, rather than sitting for hours in airport terminals, watching inflight movies or looking out of the window at 10,000 feet, he gets to enjoy a drive through lovely, rural North Yorkshire.
That’s because he is Yorwaste’s Managing Director.
Sandy explains: “I have been fortunate to work around the world but it’s not always as glamorous as it sounds.
“I spent most of the last half of 2016 on planes or in hotel rooms, but having been brought up in the countryside and becoming tired of the London rat race, I was in search of a better lifestyle.
“In 2017 I bought a house with my partner in Richmond, which we spent a few months renovating and then I saw an advert for a Finance Director at Yorwaste.
“I was successful in getting the job and, just six months later, I was appointed Managing Director so it couldn’t have gone any better.
“Now, the commute from my home to our head office in Northallerton is just 16 miles, which certainly beats sitting on an airplane for 16 hours.”
Sandy, a qualified accountant, has overall responsibility for driving forward Yorwaste in 2018 and beyond.
He adds: “Before I came here I had no previous waste management experience but my previous roles have been very varied and I managed to pick them all up.
“In any new job, or for that matter industry, you need to be prepared to ask questions and lots of them and those who have worked with me will know what I am talking about.
“I am also fortunate to have inherited a good team with decades of waste industry experience and I am already making best use of that experience.”
When he is not working, Sandy enjoys keeping fit, not particularly fast he admits, although he did complete the London Marathon in 2017.
He also enjoys making things to eat and drink. Sandy adds: “I have varying degrees of success doing this, for example my attempt at making cider doubled up as paint remover!”
