About Stokesley

Stokesley is a popular market town in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire. It has a population of just over 5,500 and is located between the larger towns of Middlesbrough, Guisborough and Northallerton. The River Leven runs through the town, is crossed by the ancient Pack Horse Bridge and provides a perfect spot for walking and picnics, as well as spectacular views of Roseberry Topping and the Moors.

Stokesley was granted its market town charter by Henry III in 1223 and its picturesque high street is lined with many independent shops and eateries. Other facilities include a primary and secondary school, leisure centre with swimming pool, health centre, police and fire station. The town also has a business park. Well-known businesses include national meat-free brand Quorn, Chapters Hotel and Restaurant, Sadler’s Café & Bistro, Y-Thai and The Yorkshire Store.

A weekly market day takes place every Friday and a monthly Farmers Market takes place on the first Saturday of every month. One of the most popular events held in Stokesley is the annual Stokesley Show. Held in September, over 20,000 people attend the largest one-day agricultural show in the North East.

Stokesley is the base for a number of active community groups which work together to make the town a better place to live in. The Stokesley branch of POSCH (Parents and Carers of Special Children) holds regular raffles to raise funds to support North Yorkshire families and also arranges one-to-one support for those in need. Stokesley & District Community Care Association provides valuable services for local people, such as drop-ins for vulnerable people and a regular community magazine, The Stream. The Globe Reading Club meets on the second Monday of each month at Stokesley’s Community Library, meanwhile, the Stokesley Pride-in-our-Town Association meets to put conservation and beautification plans in place for the town.

Stokesley Waste Statistics

Stokesley’s household waste is managed by Hambleton District Council. The region the council operates within includes Bedale, Thirsk, Easingwold, Great Ayton and Northallerton, and serves an estimated population of nearly 90,000. Since 2007, the district has been one of the top performers in North Yorkshire in terms of household waste being sent for recycling, reuse or composting. Hambleton has kept this rate above national averages since that time and has constantly strived to improve this by introducing new systems to make the process easier for residents. This performance peaked in 2015/16 when 54.1% of all household waste was sent for reuse, 12 percent higher than the national average.

The Stokesley community is active when it comes to conserving local rural habitats, reducing wastage and preventing further climate change. The Stokesley River Leven Group is one example of how the community is making a concerted effort to conserve the natural habitats close to the town. The Group is comprised of members of the Parish Council, Stokesley Agricultural Society and the National Farmers Union, to name a few. A Stokesley and Villages Climate Action Group has also been set up to raise awareness of climate change and put in place meaningful plans to mitigate its ongoing effects in the local area.

Local businesses in Stokesley have also put their support behind the environment, especially The Only Weigh Out, which opened in early 2020. The eco-friendly shop encourages customers to weigh-out their goods into their own containers, in order to reduce waste and sells a wide array of goods including agave syrup, Cumbrian tea and eco-friendly toiletries.
