About Ripon

Ripon is a cathedral city in the Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. The city is over 1,300 years old and is noted for its main feature, Ripon Cathedral, a building of significant architectural importance. It is the oldest city in England, although also one of the smallest, with a population of around 17,000.

Still unspoilt despite its age, Ripon balances a rich cultural heritage with exciting contemporary living. With its imposing cathedral, fascinating museums and a bustling market square, there is plenty to entertain visitors and if you go ten miles in any direction, you’ll discover a wealth of first-class visitor attractions in the surrounding beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside.

A very popular attraction is Ripon Racecourse. Known as the Garden Racecourse, it is one of the smallest courses in the country, but that doesn’t stop the nation’s best trainers and jockeys competing for the flat racing spoils. Make sure you also check out Ripon Police and Prison Museum, the beautiful Fountains Abbey and, no visit to Ripon is complete without getting up close and personal with the stunning cathedral.

The Ripon community is supported by a number of charitable endeavours and volunteer groups that organise events in and around the area. Ripon Community House is one venue that is frequently used by these groups. Formerly the Hospital Wing of the old Workhouse on Allhallowgate, the Community House was renovated in 2006 and is frequently used by organisations including Dementia Forward and St Anne’s Community Services.

Ripon Waste Statistics

Ripon’s household waste collection is managed by Harrogate District Council, the region they cover incorporates dozens of towns and villages around Harrogate, serving a population of over 160,000. The Harrogate District Council has managed to greatly improve the percentage of waste being sent for reuse, recycling, or compost over the last 13 years. In 2007/08, the Council reported that only 25.3% of waste was being sent for reuse, this was 8 percent lower than the national average and 12 percent higher than the worst performer in the country. Over the course of the next 6 years, however, the region was able to make consistent year on year improvements, leading to an all-time high of 41.3% in 2014/15. Since then, recycling and reuse rates have remained more or less the same, at around 40%, just a couple of points below the national average.

Luckily, there are a number of environmentally-focused groups who are constantly campaigning to improve the local environment, as well as Ripon’s environmental impact on the world at large. The Harrogate District Biodiversity Action Group is one such group that covers the entirety of the Harrogate District, including Ripon. The group aims to ‘promote the conservation and improvement of the natural environment’, by working with businesses and residents to raise awareness for their cause. Similarly, the Environment Group of Ripon is a student-led organisation that promotes greater environmental awareness within the Ripon College student body.

Plastic Free Ripon is another community-led group that is focused on completely reducing the amount of plastic used by the local community. The group takes part in litter picks, has online discussions and is aiming for Ripon to be one of the first cities in North Yorkshire to be officially plastic-free.
