Hawes is a small market town located in Upper Wensleydale in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire. Despite its small population of just over 1,100, the town frequently plays host to many more thanks to popular attractions and sights in the local area. The population in the town swells regularly, due to its ideal location in the North York Moors National Park, making it a hotspot for tourists all year round. Hawes was granted its market charter in 1699 and at 850 feet above seawater, it is the highest market town in England. The height doesn’t stop shoppers attracted by the lively Tuesday market and quaint shops and cafes.
Hawes’ magnificent Market House, in the centre of the main street, holds indoor markets each week and furniture antique auctions. There is also plenty to see and do in the village, including the Dales Countryside Museum, The Hawes Rope Makers and the recently restored Gayle Mill. The town also happens to be ideally located in the heart of the Dales walking country; visitors can take the nearby Snaizeholme Red Squirrel Trail, at Widdale, to see many of these lovable creatures making a comeback in their natural habitat.
Described by Reader’s Digest as ‘The Village That Refused to Die’, Hawes has a very active non-profit community group that seeks funding and uses the money to re-open keep community amenities that were closing. One local business that isn’t in need of this group’s help, however, is Wensleydale Creamery. Home of the famous Wensleydale cheese, the Creamery is the biggest employer in the area (hiring over 200 people) and is also a major tourist attraction in its own right (over 250,000 people visiting each year!). After briefly closing down in 1992, the Creamery was bought by ex-employees and a local businessman and has been thriving ever since.
Hawes Waste Statistics
Hawes and Wensleydale’s household waste is managed by Richmondshire District Council, covering a region that is populated by over 21,000 households over 10 villages, hamlets and smaller settlements. Although awareness for decreasing waste and increasing the amount sent for recycling, reuse or composting has been supported by such initiatives as The Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Rural Recycling Project, unfortunately, this hard work has not yet been reflected in a significant reduction of waste sent to landfill. In 2013/14, government statistics showed that 41.4% of household waste was sent for recycling or composting, at the time this was less than 2 percent below the national average. Rates of household waste sent for recycling peaked at 52.5% in 2015/16, far above the national mean of 45.71%, however, this performance did not last. In 2018/2019, the rate had fallen to 39.2%, just under 2 percent below the national mean again.
Whilst many businesses are doing their part to properly dispose of their waste, there are still some who choose to do so in an improper manner. Both unscrupulous residents and careless traders are reported to have cost Richmondshire council up to £50,000 a year for failing to properly dispose of their waste. This small minority have been reported to cost waste workers’ hundreds of hours each year as batches of recycled waste is often contaminated with non-recyclable materials. Across the 20 recycling banks used in the region, the Council reported that nearly all of them has some form of misuse leading to piles of rubbish collecting.
