Health and safety standard
Yorwaste has become one of the first in the industry to achieve a new international health and safety standard.
Following a 12-month implementation project involving representatives from all areas of the business and culminating in a rigorous 12-day independent audit covering all of Yorwaste’s activities across its operating region of Yorkshire, the company was awarded the ISO 45001:2018 accreditation.
This internationally recognised standard is designed to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses and drive continuous improvement in the management of occupational safety & health.
Peter Frankish, Yorwaste’s Head of Risk Management, said: “A few years ago, Yorwaste set out on a journey to ensure we achieved and maintained the very highest standards of health, safety and environmental performance.
“We have made a very clear commitment that the health and safety of our employees, contractors and the public of North Yorkshire & City of York is our Number 1 priority”
“Achieving ISO 45001 gives a further clear demonstration of our commitment to health and safety excellence, having already achieved the ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmental standards.”
“We are now leading the way in the sector with our health, safety, environmental and quality standards, and implementation of these systems will deliver a programme of continuous improvement to take our performance to the next level.”
During 2019 the company launched the Yorsafety Lifesavers initiative which identified 5 key areas that it needed to get right in order to keep everyone safe.
Peter added: “Our commitment to these Lifesavers and the emphasis on safe behaviour and human factors has resulted in a more positive health and safety culture.
“At the same time as rolling out the Lifesavers we worked at updating our safety processes and systems across all the 32 sites we operate, covering a wide range of activities including waste collection, transfer and disposal, materials recycling, composting and operation of Household Waste Recycling Centres.
“We couldn’t have achieved this without the support of our staff; they are the reason why our focus on health and safety has been so successful.”
