Our GET reCYCLING Campaign
We all know that cycling is good for our health and wellbeing, it’s kind to the environment and can be great fun. But a sad fact is there are many redundant bicycles sat in sheds, garages and back yards, loved at one time but no longer used.
Maybe a bike has been outgrown and no longer suits its rider. Or perhaps it’s had a tyre puncture or some other defect that you never got round to repairing. Well, if it’s not going to get used, get it re-used!
Yorwaste’s GET reCYCLING Campaign aims to encourage the reuse and recycling of pre-loved bikes.
Working in partnership with City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), and charity partners, The Recycle Project CIC, Get Cycling CIC and Resurrection Bikes, we aim to collect donated bicycles and ‘recycle’ them for good causes.
Of course, we’d still encourage you to “get on your bike” and gain all the benefits of cycling for yourself. Our GET reCYCLING campaign helps get you and your cycle back on the road. Watch out for our workshops and helpful advice sessions.
But if, for whatever reason, you can’t benefit from your bike, donating it to the campaign will at least give your bicycle a new lease of life and help someone else benefit.
How to get involved?
Donate your unwanted bikes.
Whether it’s a child’s, junior’s or adult’s cycle, a road bike, mountain bike, BMX, unicycle, tandem or just a good old classic bicycle, we’d love to have it.
Bring it/them along to any of the City of York or North Yorkshire County Council HWRCs. We will then arrange transport for the bikes to one of our charity partners, where it will be refurbished and fully safety checked before being passed on for reuse.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s good as new or seen better days. If it can be refurbished, it will (and most are).
Read our Terms & Conditions for all the legal information.
What Happens Next?
When the bicycles arrive at our charity partners, they will undergo a full assessment.
Any necessary repairs and refurbishments will then be carried out, making sure the bike is entirely safe and roadworthy.
When finished, the cycles will then either be donated to a good cause or may be sold at a reasonable cost. This is to raise funds for the recycle project and pay for new parts needed in the renovation of bicycles. Surplus cash raised will then in turn be donated to good causes.
