GET reCYCLING Campaign 2022

By Liam Patton on 1st August 2022 (updated: 8th August 2022) in News & Blog

GET reCYCLING is back for 2022 after the successes of last year’s campaign in which, as a token of your goodwill, we were thrilled to have 1200 bikes donated and a number of good causes benefitted, in an innovative way to support the waste hierarchy and the circular economy.

About the GET reCYCLING Campaign

We all know that cycling is good for our health and wellbeing, kind to the environment and can be great fun. But a sad fact is there are many redundant bicycles sat in sheds, garages and back yards, loved at one time but no longer used.

Maybe a bike has been outgrown and no longer suits its rider.  Or perhaps it’s had a tyre puncture or some other defect that you never got round to repairing.  Well, if it’s not going to get used, get it re-used!

Yorwaste’s GET reCYCLING Campaign aims to encourage the reuse and recycling of pre-loved bikes.

Ukraine Appeal

Working in partnership with City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), as well as charity partners, The Recycle Project CIC, we aim to collect donated bicycles, fix them up and ‘recycle’ them for good causes.

Last year, the good causes included Clifton Green Primary School in York, where the bikes have been used by young people as part of the school’s Cycle to School Week activities, as well as families in need and more.

This year, in addition to the usual charitable causes, we will also be donating some of your recycled bikes to Ukrainian refugees throughout North Yorkshire to ensure that they have a way to stay active and experience the delights that the English summertime has to offer.

Of course, we’d still encourage you to “get on your bike” and gain all the benefits of bicycling for yourself.  Our GET reCYCLING campaign helps get you and your bicycle back on the road. Watch out for our workshops and helpful advice sessions, which we’ll also be running in August.

If for whatever reason you can’t benefit from your bike, donating it to the campaign will at least give your bicycle a new lease of life and help someone else benefit.

How Can I Help?

Donate your unwanted bikes.

Whether it’s a child’s, junior’s or adult’s BMX, road bike, mountain bike, unicycle, tandem or just a good old classic bicycle, we’d love to have it.

Bring them along to any of the City of York or North Yorkshire County Council HWRCs.  We will then arrange transport for the bikes to The Recycle Project CIC, where it will be refurbished and fully safety checked before being passed on for reuse.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s good as new or seen better days. If it can be refurbished, it will (and most are).

What Happens Next?

When the bicycles arrive at our charity partners, they will undergo a full assessment.

Any necessary repairs and refurbishments will then be carried out, making sure the bike is entirely safe and roadworthy.

When finished, the bicycles will then either be donated to a good cause or may be sold at a reasonable cost. This is to raise funds for the recycle project and pay for new parts needed in the renovation of bicycles. Surplus cash raised will then in turn be donated to good causes.

About Our Charity Partner – The Recycle Project CIC

Yorwaste is pleased to partner once again with one of North Yorkshire’s forward-thinking social enterprises for this campaign:

The Recycle Project CIC is a not-for-profit community interest company based in York. They collect and repair bicycles, and a whole range of other products, turning waste into a positive while recycling as many goods as possible. Find out more about them at

When is the GET reCYCLING Campaign?

The campaign officially runs throughout August 2022.

Where do I bring bikes for reuse/recycling?

Take bikes along to any of the City of York or North Yorkshire County Council Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

When you arrive at the HWRC, look for the ‘Bicycles’ sign or ask a member of staff where you should leave your bike(s).

You can find the locations of North Yorkshire’s HWRCs online at or either of the York sites, or

Can I bring bikes after the campaign has ended?

Yes, bikes are welcome for reuse/recycling at the HWRCs at any time of year.

Does the condition of the donated bikes matter?

No, bikes in any condition are welcome.

What else is happening in the campaign?

As well as collecting unused bicycles donated for reuse, we are planning a range of awareness events to encourage people to get out riding their bikes.  Check out our social media channels for all the latest updates.
