Swinton Estate’s Recycling Ambition
Swinton Estate is a privately owned country estate near Masham, North Yorkshire. The Estate features the prestigious Swinton Park Hotel & Country Club & Spa, Swinton Cookery School and Swinton Bivouac glamping campsite and café.
Much of the estate lies within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), with about two-thirds of farmland and forestry, and one-third of open moorland. As a large estate situated around beautiful nature, it becomes more significant for it to practice sustainability.
In recent years, their environmental achievements have been recognised at a national level. Awards include the Gold standard in Green Tourism and the 2022/23 AA Hospitality Sustainable Business award. As of 2023, Swinton Estate has achieved the IIE Green level award.
Challenge 1:
Monitoring Waste Streams
It is Swinton’s ambition to keep evolving its sustainable practices. Records become important for them to evaluate their own progress and to achieve the Investors in the Environment award. However, as a country estate with multiple facilities, it can be challenging to keep track of all the different waste from across the whole estate.
Solution:
Customised Reports
With Yorwaste’s extensive data system, we can create personalised reports on different waste streams for their own reference. We optimised waste management plans with Swinton Estate using the reports and our industry knowledge. This successfully cut out the hassle in the waste management process and smoothen the operations within the large site.
Hotels are known to produce a lot of waste because we serve a large population of customers. It is a challenge to balance our visitors’ needs and environmental preservation, but one we are determined to rise to. We want to protect our environment for us all to enjoy in the future.
Challenge 2:
Encouraging Staff to Recycle
One important part of Swinton Estate’s sustainability practices is the staff. Continuous recycling habits in a corporation require everyone’s efforts. A big Estate such as Swinton’s will require tremendous efforts in educating staff.
Solution:
Educate Staff and Make Recycling Easy
The best way to encourage recycling is to make it hassle-free. We provide clear signages and guidelines to staff to prevent recycling contamination, making it easier to recycle. If recycling contamination occurs, we guide Swinton Estate’s staff to correct their recycling habits and provide a guideline that clears out some of the misconceptions about recycling.
Most recently, we have achieved a Bronze level award by Investors in the Environment (IIE) and we’re now pursuing the Silver level award. Yorwaste has supported us in working towards the accreditation and improving our sustainability process.
Challenge 3:
Increasing Recycling Rate
The previous waste management company of Swinton Estate only provided general waste collection. However, as an estate working towards sustainability accreditation, Swinton Estate would like to not only start recycling but also optimise the recycling methods.
Solution:
Dry Mixed Recycling Collection
Wine and beer bottles, food and preserves jars… These are common glass wastes hotels produce. We suggested Swinton Estate use our glass waste collection to optimise its recycling rate. After the service, Swinton Estate increased its recycling rate by 22%. But it did not stop here, the owners of Swinton are ambitious and wanted to push the recycling rate even further up. Most recently, Yorwaste has introduced Dry Mixed Recycling service and we are excited to see how much more recyclables can be saved from general waste.
Our target is to achieve the highest accreditation, the Green level award within the next two years and we are looking forward to continuous cooperation.
