Case Study - Scarborough Building Society

Scarborough Building Society has become one of the first organisations in North Yorkshire to join a new waste collection and recycling scheme that has been tailored specifically to meet the needs of businesses.

The Society has signed a rolling contract with Yorwaste, the North Yorkshire recycling and waste management specialist, whereby all the different types of recyclable waste from its main, Prospect House, site at Eastfield are put - unsorted - into a single designated container. The container is then collected and taken to the Scarborough Resource Recovery Centre at Seamer Carr, where the co-mingled waste is sorted into categories such as cardboard, paper, plastic and cans.

Mike Winterflood, Scarborough Building Society's Resources & Facilities Manager, said: "We decided to join the scheme after piloting it for a short time. As a result, we are now committed to filling two 1100-litre bins every week.

"Our employees are behind the scheme 100% and are ready to help us to minimise the impact we have on the environment. It also reflects the Society's corporate social responsibility commitment to our communities and environment - ensuring that we help to protect the areas in which we operate."

Ken Davidson, Yorwaste's Sales & Marketing Manager, added: "We are obviously delighted that Scarborough Building Society has joined our new scheme, demonstrating that recycling at work is the sensible, sustainable thing to do.

"With Landfill Tax rising by 33 per cent this year - from £24 to £32 a tonne, it is clear that recycling schemes such as ours will save businesses significant sums of money. Our aim is to champion the environmental aspirations of businesses by helping them to understand how they can go 'green' economically."
