Case Study - Del Monte
Over the past three years, Yorwaste has successfully collected and disposed of thousands of tonnes of waste from Del Monte's York factory.
Initially this was purely general waste, but some 18 months ago, in 2006, Del Monte awarded Yorwaste the additional contract for its cardboard waste. As a result, the total amount of waste which Yorwaste collected from the company in 2007 was 1,819 tonnes, of which about 40% was recycled.
The general waste includes plastics and tin cans and Del Monte is currently looking at ways in which it can economically separate the cans from the rest of the waste. The only waste not collected by Yorwaste are vegetable off-cuts, which are taken by a local farmer as animal fodder.
"We are working with Yorwaste to explore opportunities to increase the proportion of waste we recycle."

Site Manager, Del Monte
Phil Husband, Del Monte's Site Manager said: "As with all factories, efficient and reliable collection and disposal of waste is extremely important. However, as a responsible organisation, we also recognise the importance of maximising the amount of waste that is recycled. We are working with Yorwaste to explore opportunities to increase the proportion of waste we recycle."
Ken Davidson, Yorwaste Sales and Marketing Manager, added: "We were obviously extremely pleased to win such a major contract with a global food producer. It was particularly significant from our point of view as we were in direct competition with national contractors.
"Del Monte had been seriously considering the appointment of one company to manage its waste requirements at all its UK sites. But we were able to demonstrate that, as a local supplier with IS0 14001 accreditation, we could offer a wide range of services with a lower carbon footprint, thereby reflecting Del Monte's own corporate citizenship and environmental statements."
