Case Study - Carillion

In 2007, Carillion plc, one of the UK’s leading construction and support services companies, awarded Yorwaste the contract for handling the collection and recycling of construction waste from its four main sites in North Yorkshire.

The service involves providing separate skips for the different kinds of waste – i.e. wood, plasterboard, paper & cardboard, scrap metal, general waste and inert material. These are collected and emptied regularly and Carillion is sent a monthly statement, showing the total tonnage collected and the proportion that has been recycled.

“We are very happy with the service provided. The skips are turned round quickly and the monthly breakdown gives us all the information we need to meet the Government’s waste guidelines and our own environmental targets.” On average, Yorwaste collects nearly 200 tonnes of waste per month from Carillion sites. Of this, more than 90% is recycled and less than 10% sent to landfill.

Eric Flint, Yorwaste’s business sales consultant, adds: “We aim to offer customers the most cost-effective solution for their needs. By going beyond the simple provision of skips to building sites, we can be an effective ‘green’ partner for developers and construction companies. “As the only integrated collection and waste processing business covering most of North Yorkshire, the final destination of customers’ waste is normally one of our facilities. This means customers, such as Carillion, get the added benefit of avoiding long and potentially confusing audit trails.”

Mr Flint says Yorwaste’s service complements Carillion’s environmental performance indicators and site waste management plans by providing a back-end service which ensures that the waste generated by a project is re-used or recycled, where possible.
