Waste recovery is our number 1 goal

Landfill site

Not so very long ago our core business was landfill but the focus now is very much on the processing and recycling of materials.

Landfill diversion and the recovery of waste is our number one goal and this has resulted in us expanding our customer base geographically and increasing the amount of waste we handle and the services we provide.

An example of this is how we are diverting commercial and industrial waste, which would normally go to landfill, into a solid recovered fuel product that can be sold to the energy from waste market.

Following the acquisition of SJB Recycling, Yorwaste is now one of the largest composters in the UK (200,000 tonnes per annum) and is providing customers such as Yorkshire Water and Anglia Water with a quality product that is allowing them to divert waste from landfill and meet their environmental objectives.

The experience we have gained at Nestlé, where we helped the company report zero waste to landfill at their York plant, was a major achievement in 2011 and as a result we are now able to offer a zero waste to landfill service to other customers.

The market for the sale of commodities in the UK is still a growth stage and whilst there are now much more reprocessing facilities for fibrous material – such as paper and cardboard – and plastic, we are still, for now, reliant on the far eastern market and commodity prices remain volatile.

In 2012, the market will becomers increasingly competitive, with more companies now seeing waste as a resource and a saleable commodity, so the challenge for Yorwaste is to ensure we also remain competitive on pricing, continue to offer high quality recyclable materials that will always be in demand, and continue to offer exceptional customer service. These are the key drivers which will stand us in good stead in the future.
